2021 A Memorable Year for Buy Zimbabwe

By Moses Charedzera

The year 2021 will go down in history as one of the most memorable for Buy Zimbabwe as a number of events and activities were held during the year in which the buy local campaign was invigorated.

On the 7th of May Buy Zimbabwe hosted its highly subscribed 10th Anniversary awards where President Emmerson Mnangagwa was the guest of honour.

A number of companies were honoured for outstanding quality products which have demonstrated resilience on the market in the last ten years.

President Mnangagwa made a clarion call at the awards for supporting local products. He was honoured with the Champion of the Decade award for his role in persistently and consistently demonstrating leadership in promoting production and preference of local products.

In conferring the award on the President, Buy Zimbabwe notedthat President Mnangagwa has been at the forefront of driving local content and attended three Buy Zimbabwe events as Vice President and his first official engagement as President was officiating at a Buy Zimbabwe event.

The local content policy was also approved and passed under the leadership of the President.

On the 2nd of September Buy Zimbabwe signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Business Standards Systems Certification, BSSC for local content rating and standards certification.

The agreement provides Buy Zimbabwe with an operational framework to provide competent and credible local content rating certification to both large and small to medium enterprises across Zimbabwe and the SADC region.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Buy Zimbabwe Chairman Munyaradzi Hwengwere said the initiative will ensure that companies are incentivised to use local materials for production, adding that buying local must not be a call to buy mediocre.

He urged companies to compete at the highest level of standards in terms of product quality and packaging.

Buy Zimbabwe capped of the year with the Buy Zimbabwe Week which ran from the 22nd to the 26th of November 2021, the climax of which was the Buy Local Summit and the first ever Made in Zimbabwe Expo on the 24th of November 2021.

The Buy Zimbabwe Week raised top of mind awareness on the need to buy local products in major retail and wholesale outlets while the expo showcased an array of quality locally made goods and services.

As the new year begins, Buy Zimbabwe has another activity laden calendar of events which will see the annual awards being held on the 18th of March, the Public Procurement Conference being held on 19 May, while the Youth and SME Innovation Expo will be slated for the 22nd of July.

The Made in Zimbabwe Expo is penciled for the 22nd of September while the Buy Zimbabwe Week will run from 21 to 25 November 2022.
