A 50-year-old man has been slapped with a 9-month jail term after he was found guilty of theft.
Newton Mtetwa (50) of 171 Sixpence road Ascot, Gweru was not asked to plead to the charges when he appeared before the Zvishavane Magistrate.
It was the state’s case that on 6th September this year around 0800 hours the complainant Francis Maseko (41) of 1630 highlands Zvishavane parked his car at Purple complex and locked his vehicle using a remote control before entering the shop.
The court heard that at the same time Mtetwa used a universal remote control device to unlock the complainant’s vehicle and stole Us$300-00 which was stashed under the driver’s seat.
One Ronald Mathe spotted him and chased the accused until he apprehended him with the assistance of the mob which result in recovering the stolen cash.
Magistrate Archie Wochiunga found the accused guilty as charged and sentenced him to 9 months behind bars and suspended three months on condition of good behaviour.
