In a chilling case that has gripped the Midlands Province, Emmanuel Mahembe, a 37-year-old man from Shurugwi, has been convicted of multiple murders by the High Court sitting in Gweru. Mahembe, who preyed on unsuspecting women, lured them into relationships before brutally ending their lives.

Between August 2021 and September 2022, Mahembe met his first victim, a 37-year-old woman, at Donga, Chachacha Business Centre in Shurugwi. The couple drove to Dhanga dip tank in the woman’s Honda Fit, where Mahembe murdered her. He then wrapped her body in a blanket and buried it along the Gwamamvura River bed before selling her vehicle.

On May 22, 2021, Mahembe encountered his second victim, a 35-year-old woman. The two drove to her sister’s home in Shurugwi, but an argument over money led to Mahembe murdering her and disposing of her body in a disused mine shaft at Mutevekwi Bridge. Following the murder, Mahembe impersonated the deceased, manipulating her son into sending money to her Ecocash account, which he then used for personal gain. He also continued to use her Honda Fit.

The case came to light when the victim’s relatives grew suspicious and alerted the police, leading to Mahembe’s arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday for sentencing.
