Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union (ZCFU) president Shadreck Makombe has urged farmers to switch to horticultural crops, citing favorable conditions for quick income generation.

Makombe discouraged planting cereal crops, warning of heightened risks of disease and decay due to excessive water and insufficient time for maturation.

He advised farmers to consult agricultural extension officers for tailored guidance and adopt water conservation strategies to maximize yields during the delayed rainy season.

This week Leonard Munamati , chief director of Agricultural and Rural Development Advisory Services (ARDAS), urged farmers to apply top dressing fertilizer in split doses to counter nutrient leaching caused by heavy rains. He also emphasized the need for vigilance against pests like Fall armyworm and African armyworm, advising farmers to report infestations to Agritex officers or the Migratory Pests Department.
