Mining advocates say there is a need to create environmental awareness campaigns in various mining communities as a means of ensuring safe and sustainable use of the environment in the face of ongoing mining activities in the country.
Speaking during a Great Dyke News and Current Affairs program GREEN MINING on YAFM, mining advocate for Green Mining, Sijabulisiwe Mpofu said communities must make use of the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) when embarking on programs to educate mining entrepreneurs and the general public on the provisions of the law and imperatives of sustainable environmental management.
He also said miners should consider farmers in their mining activities as the landscape affected by mining can take a long time to heal.
In recent years, the environment has become a critical issue of concern at different levels of the economy with mining being one of the industries identified as significantly affecting the ecosystem.
