The 16th edition of the Alternative Mining Indaba (AMI) is set to take place from February 3-6, 2025, under the theme: “Energy Transition for Who? The Critical Question of Our Times!” The event, which brings together key stakeholders from across the mining, environmental, and social justice sectors, will critically examine the global shift towards sustainable energy and its impact on communities, economies, and governance.
Organized with the participation of the Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) and other regional partners, this year’s Indaba seeks to address pressing questions surrounding the just transition to cleaner energy sources. As the world moves away from fossil fuels, concerns continue to grow over who truly benefits from these changes and who bears the burden, particularly in resource-rich but economically marginalized communities.
The discussions will explore key topics such as the role of mining in the green energy transition, the ethical extraction of critical minerals, and the socio-economic effects of new energy policies on local populations. Experts, civil society leaders, faith-based organizations, and industry players are expected to engage in constructive dialogue aimed at ensuring that the transition is not only environmentally sustainable but also socially just.
