Traditional leaders in the Great Dyke say violence by artisanal miners is a constant threat in mineral-rich mining communities in Zvishavane and Mberengwa.
Speaking to Great Dyke News, Chief Mposi of Mberengwa said traditional leaders engage the miners regularly but their advice usually falls on deaf ears and every two or three weeks local police are called in to investigate suspected murder cases.
A report by Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP) shows that over a hundred people were murdered between August and October 2019 in the violence-prone mining areas of the Great Dyke. The Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) said most of these killings took place in gold-rich areas over territorial disputes.
