Barrick Gold has announced it may halt operations at its Loulo-Gounkoto gold complex in Mali due to new export restrictions. The Malian government has extended its ban on gold exports to include on-hand stock, further disrupting operations at one of the country’s largest mining ventures.

Barrick’s CEO Mark Bristow, criticized the move, calling it “unwarranted” and contrary to previous agreements with the government. The dispute, centered on the division of economic benefits, has escalated since December, with gold shipments halted.

Barrick has requested arbitration and is seeking to renegotiate terms with the government. The ongoing tensions have significant implications for Mali’s economy, its workforce, and local suppliers.
