Caledonia Mining Corporation Plc.’s local unit, Blanket Mine, is expected to commission its 12 Megawatt (MW) solar project in April 2022, making the mine independent of the national grid.
In an interview, Caledonia Chief Executive Officer Steve Curtis said the project is a necessity in the South African region because of the perennial power constraints.
He indicated that the 12mw plant will provide the base load for the mine and for now, there are no plans for storage.
He added that the project has been delayed by the fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic.
He highlighted that the government has given the company the necessary support and after the project commissioned plans for expansion and storage of excess power will be discussed.
Caledonia Mining raised $13m through the sale of 597,963 shares in the company to fund the construction of the solar power plant.
