Kenya’s Catholic Church has rejected a donation of $40,000 made by President William Ruto during a Mass at Soweto Catholic Church in Nairobi. Archbishop Philip Anyolo announced the decision, citing ethical concerns and the need to prevent the Church from being used for political purposes.

President Ruto’s donation, intended for building a priest’s house and gifting the choir, included $20,000 in cash, with a pledge for the remainder and a promise to provide the parish with a bus. Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s contribution of $1,300 was also returned.

The Catholic Church has reiterated its stance against using church events for political self-promotion, aligning with earlier directives banning such practices.

This rejection follows a statement by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops accusing the government of over-taxation, corruption, and failing to deliver on electoral promises. The bishops’ criticism reflects growing tension between the Church and political leadership, with many Kenyans supporting the Church’s stand.

Anglican Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit defended the Catholic Church, stating it echoed the frustrations of ordinary Kenyans.
