Chidimma Adetshina, the 23-year-old pageant hopeful who recently withdrew from Miss South Africa due to a nationality dispute, has accepted an invitation to participate in Miss Universe Nigeria. In a video posted to her Instagram, Adetshina expressed her excitement, stating, “I’m looking forward to participating in Africa’s most prestigious beauty pageant,” while flashing a beaming smile.
Adetshina’s withdrawal from Miss South Africa followed a xenophobic backlash questioning her eligibility despite being a South African citizen. Critics pointed to her Nigerian father and Mozambican mother as grounds for disqualification. The controversy escalated when the Department of Home Affairs, at the request of Miss South Africa organisers, investigated her mother’s citizenship, suggesting possible “identity fraud.” Concerned for her family’s safety, Adetshina made the “difficult decision” to exit the competition.
Miss Universe Nigeria has since extended an invitation to Adetshina, stating her journey in the world of pageantry is “far from over” and that she could “represent her father’s native land on the international stage.” It remains unclear whether Adetshina holds Nigerian nationality.
The Miss South Africa pageant took place last Saturday, with Mia le Roux becoming the first deaf woman to win the crown. Should Adetshina win Miss Universe Nigeria, she will compete against Le Roux at the Miss Universe pageant in November.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s Home Affairs department continues to investigate the alleged fraud and is seeking legal advice on its potential impact on Adetshina’s citizenship status.
