Traditional leader, Chief Mapanzure, has called on miners in his jurisdiction and across Zimbabwe to prioritize land reclamation after completing extraction activities. His plea follows a tragic incident in Ngwaro Village, where two children drowned in an abandoned open-pit chrome mine.
Speaking to Great Dyke News, Chief Mapanzure emphasized the need for miners to reclaim and secure disused mining pits to prevent further loss of life and protect the community, livestock, and local fauna. He urged full adherence to the countryās environmental and mining laws.
Chief Mapanzure bemoaned the recent tragedy claimed the lives of Tendai Hove (9) and her cousin Leeroy Makungwe (11), who drowned while swimming in a water-filled pit left behind by chrome mining operations.
The incident occurred on Saturday around 11:00 AM, with their bodies recovered at 3:00 PM.
