Authorities in South Kivu, DR Congo, have arrested three Chinese nationals after discovering 12 gold bars and $800,000 in cash hidden in their vehicle. The secret operation followed a tip-off to prevent interference, said Governor Jean Jacques Purusi.

The arrests highlight ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining in the mineral-rich but conflict-ridden region, where militia groups control many mines. Last month, 17 Chinese nationals accused of illegal mining and owing $10 million in taxes were controversially released and allowed to return to China.

The Chinese embassy has yet to comment as investigations continue.
