The Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) has launched an urgent response to a cholera outbreak in Glendale, Mazowe District, which has affected the community since December 21, 2024. Deputy Minister Sleiman Timios Kwidini, accompanied by ministry officials and other stakeholders, visited the area today to assess the situation.

As of today, 104 cholera cases have been reported, with one confirmed death. In response, health authorities have administered 5,000 doses of Oral Cholera Vaccine (OCV) to help curb the spread of the disease.

The outbreak has been linked to several factors, including erratic water supplies, unattended burst sewer pipes, and the consumption of water from shallow wells. These conditions have led to an increased risk of contamination, exacerbating the spread of cholera in the area.

In an effort to address the water crisis, the National AIDS Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) has committed to drilling two boreholes in Glendale and installing two 5,000-litre water tanks at Mazowe Flowers Compound. These measures are part of a broader strategy to improve access to clean water and prevent further outbreaks.
