Givemore Chinoera, a 22-year-old resident of Victoria Range, Masvingo, appeared before the Masvingo Magistrates’ Court on charges of violating the Exchange Control Act. The charges stem from allegations that he contravened Section 5(1)(a)(ii) of the Act, alongside several related statutory instruments, by engaging in illegal foreign currency dealings.

Chinoera was apprehended on August 1, 2024, at Exor Mart, Masvingo, during a police operation targeting illicit currency traders. Disguised officers were approached by Chinoera, who allegedly offered to exchange US dollars for South African rand. The officers provided USD 60 in trap money, receiving ZAR 1,100 in return. Upon revealing their identities, police recovered ZAR 2,880 from Chinoera.

The accused was remanded in custody pending a bail ruling, scheduled for the following day. The case highlights ongoing efforts by the authorities to combat illegal foreign currency trading in Zimbabwe.
