Economists Call For Police And Immigration Department Reequipping To End Smuggling

An economist has emphasized the need to reequip the country’s security and immigration authorities to curb the smuggling of gold, a resource that should be bringing in much needed foreign currency to the country.

In an interview with the media, Economist and Investment Banker Gilbert Muponda said it is saddening to see the illegal movement of gold continuing at the expense of the national economy.

He said it is important to equip the police and immigration authorities to curb this costly leakage.

He also indicated that the companies that process and refine gold in the country should be monitored.

This follows this week’s arrest of 33-year-old Tashinga Nyasha Masinire at the OR Tambo International Airport with 23 pieces of gold worth an estimated R11 million in his luggage.

He was granted bail of R100.000 at the Kempton Park Regional Court.
