EMA Urged To Do More In Reducing Pollution From Mining Activities

Development practitioners have called on the Environmental Management Agency to do more to push mining authorities to make an effort to minimize pollution that results from mining activities.

Speaking recently, Development Programmer Regai Tsunga highlighted that Section 73 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe provides for every person’s right to an environment that is not harmful to their health and well-being. He called on the relevant authorities to act.

Pollution resulting from mining activities has been a problem in the country for a long time. The Environmental management Agency have at times stepped in to try and turn the tide. Last year EMA pressed criminal charges against Penalonga gold mining concern, Redwing Mine, over its failure to manage mine dumps that have reportedly been choking locals with dust fumes.
