The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has issued a stern warning against starting fires in velds during the fire season, highlighting that it is an offense to ignite a fire that one cannot control. This call comes as EMA intensifies its efforts to prevent veld fires, which pose a significant threat to the environment, livestock, and community livelihoods.

Speaking to Great Dyke News, Oswald Ndlovu, the EMA Midlands Education and Publicity Officer, reported that since the start of the 2024 fire season, one fire incident has been recorded in the Somabhula area. The fire disrupted the activities of livestock farmers, raising concerns about the preparedness and vigilance of farmers and communities during this critical period. Ndlovu emphasized the importance of adhering to fire safety regulations to prevent further incidents and stressed the need for greater awareness and collaboration among stakeholders.

ā€œThe fire season is a time when all communities need to be on high alert. We urge everyone to follow the guidelines and avoid starting any fires that could quickly get out of control,ā€ said Ndlovu. He called for increased cooperation between local authorities, farmers, and community members to mitigate the risks associated with veld fires. EMA continues to monitor fire incidents across the country and remains committed to raising awareness about fire safety.

In Zimbabwe, the fire season typically runs from July 31 to October 31, during which the use of fire outside residential and commercial properties is restricted to prevent veld fires. EMA works closely with communities on fire prevention projects, including the construction of fireguards and training firefighting teams. However, due to climate change and variability in seasonal patterns, there have been discussions about adjusting the fire season dates, with the 2022 fire season extended to November 30.

Veld fires in Zimbabwe are often caused by human activities such as land clearing, hunting, and improper disposal of cigarette stubs. These fires can destroy vast areas of forest and grassland, posing a severe threat to food security and biodiversity. EMA continues to advocate for responsible fire management practices and encourages the public to report any suspicious activities that could lead to veld fires.

As the fire season progresses, EMA urges communities to remain vigilant, adhere to fire safety protocols, and collaborate with authorities to protect the environment from the devastating impacts of veld fires.
