A fire engulfed Liberia’s parliamentary chambers a day after plans to remove Speaker Koffa triggered tense protests.
Several demonstrators, including an aide to former President George Weah, were arrested during the protests. Representative Foko, a key House figure, is under scrutiny after allegedly posting a Facebook video stating, “If they want us to burn the chambers, we will burn it.” Police chief Coleman said Foko’s comments warrant clarification, especially given the timing of the fire.
Coleman also urged Koffa to explain a controversial Facebook post made during the unrest. Neither Foko nor Koffa has responded publicly.
President Joseph Boakai expressed disappointment over the incident and ordered a thorough investigation. The government has offered a $5,000 reward for information about the blaze.
The fire comes amid a deepening power struggle in the House of Representatives, with factions divided over Koffa’s leadership. A Supreme Court ruling has failed to resolve the dispute, adding to the chamber’s turmoil.
