The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) has suspended all fishing activities at Lake Chivero following a severe environmental disaster. Over 1,000 fish and several wildlife, including four rhinos, have died due to contamination caused by untreated sewage.
Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo attributed the crisis to raw sewage discharged into the lake, resulting in suffocation of aquatic life and poisoning of wildlife through cyanobacteria-contaminated water.
It is advised that the public purchase fish only from certified butcheries and supermarkets to ensure safety.
