October 18th marked a vibrant day at Mimosa Mine Grounds as the annual Mimosa Mine Sports and Fun Day kicked off. Under sunny skies, hundreds converged to compete in 20 sporting disciplines, from athletics to snooker. This celebration of wellness and friendly rivalry brought people together, promoting a healthier, happier lifestyle.

According to Mimosa Mine General Manager, Engineer Stephen Ndiyamba, “Every year, around this time we hold the Mine’s Annual Sports Day.” He also emphasized the importance of the event.

“This is a special occasion where we dedicate time to bringing together our employees, contractors, stakeholders, and the wider community to engage in various sporting activities.”

The event serves as the culmination of Mimosa Mine’s Wellness program, showcasing a diverse range of sporting events throughout the year. “The anticipation is palpable,” Ndiyamba noted. “Each participant trains diligently, practices relentlessly, and prepares collaboratively for this highly anticipated event. It’s a highlight on our annual calendar, one that everyone looks forward to with excitement.”

Ndiyamba also stressed the significance of teamwork. “At the heart of our organization lies the core value of teamwork. Sports provide a unique platform to break down traditional barriers, allowing managers and junior employees to interact in a relaxed, informal setting.”

Despite facing challenges due to fluctuations in metal prices, Mimosa Mine remains committed to its mission. Ndiyamba expressed gratitude for the participation of other companies and suppliers. “In previous years, other companies like Unki have participated in our awareness programs, and this year, we are thrilled to welcome our business partners from Harare and Bulawayo who have joined us in the festivities.”

Ndiyamba also said they drew inspiration from the vibrant Chamber of Mines games which were previously held in the 1980s and 1990s and are hopeful that these may be resuscitated.

“As an organization, we are dedicated to investing in our employees, particularly in their health and well-being,” Ndiyamba said. “Healthy employees are motivated and engaged, leading to improved performance. Ultimately, our employees are the foundation of our success.”

It was also notable to see that the organization selected one of their young female athlete, Nyasha Matanha, to be the Guest of Honour for the day. This was done in recognition of her commitment and dedication to the Wellness Program while at the same time bringing attention to the issue of Breast Cancer awareness which is commemorated internationally during October.

The Sports Day event embodied Mimosa Mine’s commitment to teamwork, community spirit, and employee well-being as aptly stated by the Guest Honour, Nyasha who said, “Together, we look forward to a day filled with camaraderie, competition, and celebration, reinforcing our commitment to teamwork and community spirit.”
