In a decisive move aimed at safeguarding lives, Minister of Mines and Mining Development, Zhemu Soda, has issued a stern order instructing artisanal miners to cease operations during the rainy season. The directive follows recent incidents of collapsed mineshafts and tunnels, highlighting the extreme risks posed by adverse weather conditions.

While formal mining companies are permitted to continue operations, stringent adherence to safe mining practices and compliance with all regulatory requirements and government instructions are mandated. The decision comes in the wake of a remarkable rescue of 15 artisanal miners trapped in a collapsed mineshaft in Penhalonga.

During a media conference in Harare addressing mining precautions for the rainy season, Minister Zhemu Soda emphasized the paramount importance of prioritizing safety. Artisanal miners are advised to suspend operations entirely during the rainy season and resume once conditions improve. Ministry inspectors will enforce compliance with governance requirements, with penalties for non-compliance.
Minister Soda urged miners to cooperate with government authorities, emphasizing the implementation of safety practices learned during awareness training sessions. Medium and large-scale miners are permitted to continue operations but are reminded to observe safe mining methods.

Specific precautions outlined include avoiding mining along rivers or waterways, refraining from digging and blasting in old mine workings prone to collapse, and steering clear of sinking shafts in low-lying areas susceptible to flooding. The directive underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of miners and preventing potential disasters during adverse weather conditions.
