The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Mining Development says traditional leaders will play a vital role in the formalisation of artisanal and small scale miners.
Speaking to Great Dyke news, the Committee’s Chairperson, Hon. Edmund Mkaratigwa said traditional leaders are the custodians of natural resources in communities hence the need to involve them on the pegging of mine claims.
He added that traditional leadership has a huge role to play in mining as an institutional government.
He highlighted that the government is always ready to extend traditional leaders’ powers.
Recently Chief Chirumanzu appealed to the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development to consult traditional leaders when allocating mining claims.
