A Harare man appeared in court on charges of unlawful possession of dangerous drugs and unregistered medicine following his arrest aboard a Harare-bound bus.

Roy Zano (30) of Highfield, Harare, was apprehended on September 18, 2024, after detectives from the CID Drugs and Narcotics Unit in Masvingo received a tip-off that he was carrying illegal substances on a Simatra bus traveling from South Africa.

The court heard that, detectives acted swiftly on the information and tracked down the bus at the CSC Zimbabwe Revenue Authority warehouse. They found Zano in his seat, introduced themselves, and informed him of their search. During the search, they uncovered 13 transparent plastic sachets of dagga hidden in two of his travel bags. The drugs weighed 13.15 kilograms and have an estimated street value of USD 13,150.

In a second charge, Zano was also found in possession of 15 litres of unregistered Bron Cleer cough syrup, commonly abused for recreational purposes. The cough syrup had been repacked into three five-litre containers. Several empty bottles of the same substance were also discovered, concealed in a black plastic bag. The total value of the cough syrup is estimated at USD 750.

Zano was arrested at the scene and is currently seeking bail in the Masvingo Magistrates’ Court.

The case highlights growing concerns over drug trafficking and the illegal importation of dangerous substances into Zimbabwe, as law enforcement agencies continue to clamp down on such activities. The matter is still under investigation as authorities determine the full extent of Zano’s involvement.
