Israeli airstrikes hit Beirut’s southern suburbs following an evacuation order issued by its military for the area. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have yet to comment on the operation.
The strikes come as Israel’s security cabinet prepares to discuss a potential 60-day ceasefire deal with Hezbollah in Lebanon. The proposed agreement reportedly includes the gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanon, coupled with Hezbollah pulling back from the Israeli border.
Israeli forces launched a land invasion of Lebanon nearly two months ago, citing an escalation of rocket attacks from Hezbollah over the past year.
The ceasefire talks in Lebanon, however, will not directly impact Israel’s ongoing conflict in Gaza. The war in Gaza began after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7 last year and has since resulted in over 44,000 Palestinian deaths.
As tensions in both regions persist, the outcomes of the security cabinet meeting could significantly shape the trajectory of the conflict in Lebanon.
