Kamandama Should Be a Reminder of the Importance of Safety says Mine Workers Representatives

A mine worker union says the Anniversary of the Hwange Colliery 1972 disaster should always be a reminder to mining firms in the country that safety and health are of the utmost importance.

Speaking to the Great Dyke News, Zimbabwe Diamond and Allied Mineral Workers Union ZIDAMWU Secretary-General, Justice Chinhema said miners should always know their rights in terms of working in a safe environment with the correct protection.

Monday marked 50 years since a string of underground gas explosions killed the 427 miners in a 5km tunnel shaft at the Wankie Colliery’s Number 2 Shaft known as Kamandama in 1972.
