The Zimbabwe Republic Police has confirmed the arrest of a 38-year-old man in connection with the murder of a Lower Gweru resident, while two other suspects remain at large.

According to Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, the incident occurred on the evening of July 30, 2025, near Ngxongxo Tuckshops in Chief Bunina’s area, Lower Gweru.

The deceased, identified as 34-year-old Naison Ntini of Mugwagwa Village under Chief Sogwala, was reportedly drinking beer at the local tuckshop with the suspects—Alfred Mutombeni (38), his brother Isheunesu Mutombeni, both of Matambo Village under Chief Bunina, and one Mduduzi Dzikamai, whose full particulars are yet to be established.

Inspector Mahoko said an altercation arose when Ntini allegedly entered behind the tuckshop counter, prompting the trio to accuse him of attempting to steal. They allegedly took turns to assault him using open hands and switches. Ntini reportedly managed to escape the attack and fled the scene.

His lifeless body was discovered the following morning approximately 200 metres from the tuckshops.

Police have since arrested Alfred Mutombeni, who is currently in custody as investigations continue. The other two suspects, Isheunesu Mutombeni and Mduduzi Dzikamai, are still at large.

“We appeal to members of the public who may have information on the whereabouts of the two suspects to contact the nearest police station,” said Inspector Mahoko.

Investigations are ongoing.
