An American man , Luigi Mangione has been charged with first-degree murder in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, the New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced Tuesday. Mangione also faces charges of second-degree murder, including one count classified as an act of terrorism.
Bragg described the 4 December shooting as a “well-planned, targeted murder intended to sow terror.” If convicted of the most serious charges, Mangione could face life imprisonment without parole.
The 26-year-old suspect, arrested five days after the shooting at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, was found with a fake ID, a “ghost gun,” and documents detailing his “motivation and mindset.” Police matched his fingerprints to evidence at the crime scene.
Mangione, who had been staying at a Manhattan hostel using false identification, is scheduled for a court hearing on 19 December regarding extradition to New York. Prosecutors suggested he may waive the hearing.
