Tongai Kadungure, a 42-year-old man from Hopi Village, has been sentenced to eight months in prison for stealing farming inputs worth US$7,806 from his father-in-law, Assa Kanyera. The theft, which occurred in October 2022, involved a daring break-in at Kanyera’s storeroom at Sunnyside Farm.

Kadungure, along with his accomplice Tinotenda Kanyongo, who remains at large, allegedly took the keys to the storeroom from Kanyera’s house. They then made off with 38 bags of 50kg Urea fertilizer, 650 litres of diesel, seed maize, sugar beans, chemicals, blankets, and various household items. To cover their tracks, they locked the storeroom after the theft, leaving no immediate signs of the crime.

The theft went unnoticed until February 2023, when Kanyera opened the storeroom and discovered the missing items. Kadungure fled the scene but was eventually arrested in June 2024 in St. Alberts following a tip-off to the police. During interrogation, Kadungure admitted to selling some of the stolen goods to residents of Highwood, Concession. Fortunately, some of the stolen items were recovered from the buyers.
