A Mwenezi man has been convicted of culpable homicide after causing the death of a fellow villager in a debt-related dispute dating back to 2019.
Fanson Phineas Mapuranga (35) appeared before the High Court sitting in Gweru, where he was found guilty of unlawfully causing the death of Dhawuya Mapuranga (41).
The court heard that on August 15, 2019, a drunk Dhawuya confronted Fanson at a gathering in Mberengwa over an unpaid debt, slapping him twice. In retaliation, Fanson grabbed Dhawuya, who fell backward and lost consciousness. Despite efforts to seek medical attention, Dhawuya succumbed to septic shock and related complications in December 2019.
The court sentenced Fanson to three years in prison, wholly suspended for five years, meaning he will not serve jail time unless he commits another offense within that period.
