Matabeleland South province will soon be home to its third university, following the approval of the University of Matopo by the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE).

The proposal, an expansion of the Brethren in Christ Church’s (BICC) education investments, was approved by ZIMCHE’s Higher Education Quality Assurance Committee (HEQAC). The province already hosts Solusi University and Gwanda State University.

The provisional registration, valid from January 2025 to January 2026, allows the university to develop its facilities and submit academic programs for approval. However, student recruitment can only proceed with further ZIMCHE approval.

The University of Matopo Trust, led by Professor Henry Sibanda, is set to begin development with plans to apply for full registration before the provisional period expires.
