Deep in the heart of Midlands Province, a beacon of hope is rising brick by brick — through the unwavering commitment of a platinum miner determined to leave a legacy beyond minerals. Since 2021, Mimosa Mining Company has poured funds into the refurbishment and expansion of Mberengwa District Hospital, a facility that now stands as a symbol of corporate conscience and community upliftment.
The investment, which includes a state-of-the-art theatre, mortuary, laundry facility, maternity ward, and both male and female wards, is part of Mimosa’s wider Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) thrust that has been lauded by both community leaders and traditional authorities.
Speaking during a tour of the hospital’s ongoing works, Senator Chief Dr Ngungumbane could not hide his admiration for the mining giant’s efforts, calling them “a model of what responsible corporate citizenship should look like.”
“This is not just corporate social responsibility — this is nation building. What Mimosa is doing in Mberengwa and across the country deserves national recognition. We as traditional leaders are proud to associate with such a partner.”
Echoing the sentiment was Chief Bvute, who highlighted the transformative impact the hospital improvements have had on access to healthcare in Mberengwa.
“People used to travel long distances for basic healthcare services. Now, quality care is coming to their doorstep. This is a game-changer for Mberengwa.”
Despite facing headwinds from global market instability and low platinum group metal (PGM) prices, Mimosa has remained resolute in its commitment to uplift communities within its operational footprint. The miner’s General Manager, Mr. Stephen Ndiyamba, underscored this ethos during the visit.
“We are mining a finite resource. It is only right that as we extract value from the ground, we also create lasting value above it. Our focus is on growing with our host communities, not just profiting from them.”
Ndiyamba revealed that work will continue with an administration block, outpatient department, and a fully equipped laboratory, all scheduled for completion by April 2026.

Mimosa’s efforts in Mberengwa are not isolated. The company has been a key driver of development across Zvishavane and other parts of the country, setting a national benchmark for CSR in Zimbabwe’s mining sector.
At a time when public health institutions across the country struggle with underfunding and infrastructural decay, the partnership between Mimosa, the Ministry of Health and the people of Mberengwa offers a compelling example of how private sector partnerships can transform lives.
In a nation searching for sustainable development models, Mimosa’s Mberengwa Miracle may well become the blueprint.
