Zimbabwe’s largest beverage maker, Delta Corporation, has posted record sales volumes in the December quarter, buoyed by stronger consumer spending linked to increased mining activity and improved agricultural performance.

In a trading update, Delta said demand across its portfolio remained robust, supported by rising consumer incomes and relatively stable pricing, allowing the business to exceed historical sales levels.

Lager beer volumes rose 16% in the December quarter and 19% over the nine months to December, with the company citing sustained demand despite growing competition. Sorghum beer sales climbed 21% in the quarter and 18% over the nine-month period, with Delta reporting “record-breaking daily sales rates” during the quarter.

The soft drinks segment also delivered solid growth, with volumes up 18% in the quarter and 14% over nine months. Delta said it absorbed the sugar tax to keep prices stable, but warned that “price adjustments may be required” as pressure mounts from the sugar levy and a higher VAT rate.

Delta flagged increasing competition from cheaper imports and alternative products, even as some categories continued to outperform. Maheu emerged as the fastest-growing segment, with volumes doubling in the quarter and rising 172% over the nine months following the restoration of the Shumba Maheu brand in 2024.

Volumes at Schweppes Zimbabwe increased 31% in the quarter and 16% over the nine months.

However, the tax burden remains significant. Delta and Schweppes together paid the equivalent of US$20.3 million in sugar tax in the year to date, compared with US$25.7 million in the prior period.
