The Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ) is implementing advanced systems to combat mineral leakages that have cost the country billions of dollars. Treasury estimates Zimbabwe loses approximately USD $1.8 billion annually due to mineral smuggling and inefficiencies in revenue management, with gaps in transparency, accountability, and verification processes exacerbating the issue.

Research highlights a lack of capacity in government departments to evaluate mining data and conduct proper assaying, but MMCZ Acting General Manager Marketing, Gumisai Nenzou, said the corporation is addressing these shortcomings.

Nenzou revealed that MMCZ is collaborating with key security departments and has installed modern equipment at strategic locations to enhance mining data evaluation.

Mining accounts for 60% of Zimbabwe’s foreign exchange earnings and contributes 12% to the GDP, underscoring the sector’s critical role in the national economy.
