The Russian Foreign Ministry, represented by Maria Zakharova, has suggested that Reuters retract a story claiming that it was “highly likely” that Syrian President Bashar Assad died in a plane crash.

This claim followed reports of a plane leaving Damascus under mysterious circumstances. The story was later amended by Reuters after TASS news agency confirmed that Assad had safely landed in Moscow.

Zakharova criticized Reuters for spreading what she called fake news, accusing the agency of publishing false reports akin to those it fights against.
