Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, the vice-president of Namibia’s ruling South West Africa People’s Organization (Swapo), has made history as the country’s first female president. She secured a decisive victory in last week’s election, earning more than 57% of the votes cast.

In her acceptance speech, Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized the values of peace and stability. “The Namibian nation has voted for peace and stability,” she said during the results announcement in the capital, Windhoek.

Nandi-Ndaitwah brings with her a wealth of experience, having served in high government positions for over 25 years. A seasoned leader and Swapo stalwart, she is widely regarded as a trusted figure in Namibian politics.

Swapo, which has governed Namibia since its independence in 1990, remains a dominant force in the nation’s politics. The party played a pivotal role in the country’s liberation struggle against apartheid South Africa, cementing its legacy in Namibia’s history.

Once sworn in, Nandi-Ndaitwah will join Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan as one of Africa’s only female presidents, breaking barriers and setting a precedent for female leadership in the region.

Her leadership marks a new chapter for Namibia, as she builds on Swapo’s decades-long legacy while steering the nation toward continued peace and progress.
