Oops, Champions Again?

By Obert Sithole

After FC Platinum was crowned the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League champions for the fourth consecutive time at the weekend, captain Petros Mhari said many people had doubted their pedigree to retain the league.

When some senior players left the club, no one gave the Zvishavane platinum miners a chance to win the league. But the Pure Platinum Play surprised all and sundry by reclaiming their title.

FC Platinum had an indifferent start to the season, which led to many football pundits writing them off. At some stage, they occupied position six on the log, which strengthened the assertion that they would not replicate the feat achieved by the Dynamos and Highlanders of winning the league four consecutive times.

But they had the last laugh as the league trophy is now safely locked in their cabinet.

Mhari said determination and hunger to do better spurred them on.

“The coming in of some youngsters in the squad, after some senior players had left us, made people doubt our challenge.

But results have vindicated us, we are the champions,” Mhari said.

“I remember some people taunting us saying we will finish at position seven on the log, and this strengthened our resolve to do better. We told ourselves to remain united and every point we were getting, especially away from home, was important to us. All the negative things people said about us made us work even harder. It spurred us on. So glory to the Almighty for guiding us the whole season.” he added.
