Early indicators suggest Zimbabwe’s 2025–2026 agricultural season could deliver a strong harvest, with farmers across the country reporting good crop establishment and favourable rainfall patterns.

Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union (ZCFU) Chairperson Dr Shadreck Makombe says the season is shaping up positively, raising hopes for improved food security and farm incomes. Speaking to Great Dyke News 24, Dr Makombe attributed the encouraging outlook to steady and well-distributed rains received so far.

“The rainfall distribution is fairly good across the whole country, and crop establishment looks good as well,” he said. “I would rather say the general agricultural outlook for 2025–2026 is quite promising. For now, everything is pointing in the right direction.”

The positive assessment comes after recent seasons were disrupted by erratic weather and drought conditions linked to climate variability. This season’s improved start has boosted confidence among both commercial and smallholder farmers, particularly in key grain-producing regions.

Government is targeting to enhance maize production to over three million metric tonnes by 2030, farmers are playing an active role in boosting maize productivity through climate proof agriculture.

If the favourable conditions persist, the 2025–2026 season could mark a significant recovery for Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector, which remains central to economic growth, employment and rural livelihoods.
