The call for entries for the 11th edition of the Mining Media Awards has elicited an impressive response, with a record number of submissions from journalists eager to gain recognition for their pivotal role in shaping public perception within the mining sector.

In an exclusive interview with Great Dyke News 24, Moses Charedzera, the Public Relations and Communications Executive at Minex, expressed enthusiasm over this year’s participation. “The response has been quite overwhelming,” he stated. “We have exceeded our target of 80 entries by 20%, totaling 98 entries, compared to the 78 we received last year.”

Charedzera acknowledged the hard work of journalists in the industry, stating, “This is quite pleasing, and we would like to thank all the journalists who submitted their work. The competition will be stiff this year, and we are confident that only the best will be rewarded and honored.”

The primary focus of this year’s entries has been Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which garnered the highest number of submissions at 26. Other key topics included lithium, small-scale and artisanal mining, gold, diamond, platinum, coal, gas, and chrome.

Tafadzwa Dube, president of the Association of Mining Journalists in Zimbabwe, also expressed delight at the significant rise in entries.

“I am truly delighted with the overwhelming response to this year’s Mining Media Awards entries. The 20% increase in submissions reflects a growing commitment and passion among journalists,” he remarked.

Dube noted that this progress emphasizes the relevance of responsible reporting in promoting transparency and development within the mining industry. “I commend all journalists for their outstanding efforts and look forward to celebrating their achievements at this year’s awards,” he added.

The adjudication team is scheduled to meet next week to determine the winners. This process will evaluate submissions based on several criteria, including accuracy, depth of reporting, investigative skills, and the ability to highlight critical issues in the mining sector. Each entry will be scrutinized for its impact, originality, and contribution to transparency, sustainability, and responsible mining practices.

The Mining Media Awards continue to uphold excellence in mining journalism, inspiring reporters to uncover stories and effect lasting change within the industry and society. Winners in each category will be announced at the awards ceremony on November 15, 2024, in Harare.
