Police in the Midlands have warned the public against attempting to cross flooded rivers following the tragic drowning of a suspected poacher in Kwekwe.

Speaking to Great Dyke News, ZRP Midlands spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the incident occurred on February 14, 2025, at around 10 PM at Morena Game Ranch, where Severino Kufahandiuyi (25) and three accomplices were allegedly hunting a kudu.

Inspector Mahoko said as the animal fled across the swollen Matura River, the men attempted to follow but were overpowered by the strong currents, resulting in Kufahandiuyi being swept away. His body was later recovered and taken to Kwekwe General Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Authorities have cautioned that rivers are likely to flood as heavy rains persist. On Tuesday, ZINWA reported that Lake Mutirikwi has reached full capacity and is spilling, Manyuchi Dam stands at 99.5%, while Tugwi-Mukosi—Zimbabwe’s largest inland dam—is at 96% and expected to spill if current inflows continue.
