Political Commentators Speak On UN Special Rapporteur’s Visit

Political commentators say the visit of the United Nations Special Rapporteur is a diplomatic victory for the government but will not do much to change the sanctions situation as they are outside the multilateral framework of the United Nations.

Political Commentator Alexander Rusero spoke to Great Dyke News.

MDC-T presidential Spokesperson Lloyd Damba said the visit of the UN Special Rapporteur will show the international community how the sanctions which are missing their target have caused the suffering of the ordinary citizens.

However, the MDC Alliance Secretary for International Relations Gladys Hlatywayo said the party is going to meet the Rapporteur to lay out the party’s understanding of the issue.

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights, Alena Douhan, arrived in Zimbabwe for a 10-day mission to assess the impact of sanctions on the country.

She met President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday ahead of meeting other stakeholders from whom she will gather first-hand information related to the negative impact of the sanctions.
