President Emmerson Mnangagwa has issued a stern call for enhanced efforts in combating corruption, describing it as one of the most serious threats to economic development, progress, and stability on the African continent.
Speaking on the corrosive effects of corruption, he highlighted how the scourge undermines growth and stability, reversing gains in development. “Its negative impact cannot be downplayed,” the President emphasized, adding that the fight against corruption remains a “serious and complex challenge.”
The president warned that corruption networks are becoming increasingly sophisticated, infiltrating all sectors of society. He stressed the importance of building robust institutions to ensure that Zimbabwe’s natural resources and national assets benefit the majority, rather than enriching a select few.
“I challenge the private sector, civil society, political parties, churches, and other socio-economic groups to cultivate integrity and high ethical standards in the execution of their functions,” Mnangagwa said.
He also urged institutions within the criminal justice system to intensify efforts to investigate and prosecute corruption cases more effectively. “They must be above reproach and ensure that all cases of corruption within their rank and file are thoroughly investigated, with corrupt officials punished,” Mnangagwa declared.
The President criticized the “catch and release” phenomenon, where prosecutions drag on without yielding tangible results. He stressed the need for swift and decisive action against both high-profile and low-level offenders.
“The arrest and successful prosecution of corrupt big and small fish alike must be the new normal,” the president remarked.
