SADC Chairman and Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called for enhanced partnerships and investments to bolster the energy sector across the region.

Speaking at the commissioning of the Titan New Energy project in Zimbabwe, President Mnangagwa emphasized the need for innovative energy solutions and robust infrastructure to address power challenges in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

“Another critical area that needs partnerships and investments for a viable and vibrant energy sector in SADC is the construction of more transmission interconnections across the region. This would enable collective and shared benefits from new generation capacity,” he said.

President Mnangagwa praised public-private partnerships for driving the diversification of the region’s energy mix and highlighted their transformative potential.

“Through mutually beneficial private-public sector cooperation, the quest to realize a diversified energy mix is coming to fruition. The multi-pronged energy projects across the sector are poised to transform the landscape of electricity generation,” he noted.

The Titan New Energy project, a partnership between Titan New Energy and the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA), is set to inject US$1 billion into the establishment of a 720MW waste-to-energy thermal power plant in Hwange and a 200MW solar power plant in Gweru. The project is expected to produce an annual power output of 5.76 GWh upon its completion in December 2028.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between Titan New Energy and ZESA, and a joint working group has been formed to oversee the successful implementation of the project. The initiative marks a significant step toward achieving Zimbabwe’s energy security goals while contributing to the region’s broader energy sustainability objectives
