The man accused of killing United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson appeared in a Pennsylvania court Tuesday, sparking a dramatic scene as he jostled with police and shouted at reporters.
Luigi Mangione, 26, faces extradition to New York for the December 4th shooting outside a Manhattan hotel. Prosecutors describe it as a targeted attack. Mangione, arrested Monday after a six-day manhunt, was found with a weapon resembling the murder gun, a silencer, and fake ID. He is charged with murder in New York and weapons offenses in Pennsylvania.
Mangione denies being the shooter, and his lawyer insists the case requires more evidence. He was denied bail, deemed too dangerous to release, and remains in custody. New York Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed she will sign an extradition warrant.
Police revealed a handwritten note allegedly found on Mangione expressing frustration with the healthcare system and corporate America. Detectives say this may indicate a motive.
Brian Thompson, CEO since 2021, had reportedly received threats linked to medical coverage disputes.
Mangione, who previously lived in Hawaii, is a software engineering graduate with ties to Maryland and California. His family has expressed shock at his arrest, offering condolences to Thompson’s family.
