A missing American woman, Brook Cheuvront, has been found dead after a solo hike on South Africa’s Table Mountain, officials confirmed.
The 20-year-old University of North Carolina student, who was interning at an NGO in Cape Town, was reported missing on Saturday after her tracking app stopped updating and she became unreachable.
Her body was discovered Sunday on the slopes of Devil’s Peak following an extensive search by rangers, rescue teams, and a helicopter. The circumstances of her death remain under investigation, and an autopsy will determine the cause, police said.
In a statement, South African National Parks (SANParks) advised against hiking alone, though authorities dismissed claims of a crime problem in the park. Cheuvront’s father expressed the family’s devastation in a Facebook post.
