Two women died in separate road traffic accidents that occurred along the Harare-Bulawayo Road on December 14 and 15, 2024, police have confirmed.
Speaking to Great Dyke News, ZRP Midlands spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said in the first incident, which took place on December 14 at around 7:20 AM, a Toyota Hilux driven by Ray Murefu (53) of Benside, Bulawayo, experienced a rear right tyre burst near the 322-kilometre peg. The vehicle veered off the road and overturned.
Police attended the scene and all occupants were taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital, where Zondi Murefu, an 80-year-old female passenger, was pronounced dead.
Inspector Mahoko said in the second accident occurred on December 15 at approximately 4:30 AM. A Ford Bantam driven by Tafadzwa Helegwa (41) of Simbi Park, Redcliff, veered off the road and collided with a tree near the 223-kilometre peg.
The police transported the injured to Kwekwe General Hospital, where Siyenzeni Helegwa (40), a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead upon admission. The other occupants remain hospitalized with varying injuries.
Authorities are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads and to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on journeys to prevent further loss of life.
