A tragic drowning incident has claimed the lives of two young boys, aged 5 and 6, in Muradzikwa Village, Chipinge, after they drowned in an abandoned pit filled with rainwater while swimming.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the incident, which occurred on February 24, 2025. According to authorities, the victims had been left at home under the care of their 7-year-old sister while their grandmother attended a funeral in the neighborhood.

The three children later went to a nearby pit to swim, but the activity turned fatal when the two boys submerged and failed to resurface. Their sister survived the ordeal.

Details on the depth of the pit and whether attempts were made to rescue the victims remain unclear. However, the incident highlights the dangers posed by abandoned pits, especially during the rainy season when they become water-filled and resemble small dams.

Police have urged communities to ensure constant supervision of children and to take precautions around unguarded water bodies.
