Two women were killed and four others injured in a fatal head-on collision along the Harare-Bulawayo Road yesterday afternoon, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed.
The accident occurred around 1:50 PM at the 254.5-kilometre peg, when a Mercedes Benz, driven by Cloud Mararike (46) from Shurugwi, collided with a Honda Fit traveling in the opposite direction.
According to the police, Mararike’s vehicle reportedly experienced a mechanical fault, locking its steering and brakes, which caused the car to veer into the oncoming lane, leading to the crash.
“Two females, including the driver of the Honda Fit, tragically died at the scene,” a ZRP spokesperson said. “Four other passengers sustained varying injuries and have been taken to the hospital for treatment.”
Police are yet to notify the families of the deceased and are calling on anyone with missing female relatives to contact ZRP Gweru Traffic for identification purposes.
Authorities have once again urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey. “We remind all drivers to take necessary safety measures and inspect their vehicles to prevent such tragic accidents,” added the spokesperson.
