Zimbabwe’s national grid may struggle to accommodate new energy projects, despite a surge in renewable energy developments the power utility has revealed.

Speaking at the Zim-Zambia Energy Summit yesterday, ZESA Executive Chairman Sydney Gata highlighted delays in refurbishing Hwange Power Station’s aging generators, a plan that could restore 800 megawatts of capacity but is still awaiting Cabinet approval.

The first 300 megawatts from the refurbishment are expected by December next year, but Gata expressed concern about the grid’s readiness to handle incoming projects.

Gata urged stakeholders to prioritize grid upgrades to sustain Zimbabwe’s growing energy ambitions.
