The Zimbabwe Football Association is elated with the women senior national football team progression to the Africa Women Cup of Nation final round after their 6-1 aggregate demolition of hapless Eswatini. The Mighty Warriors beat Eswatini 3-0 away and in the reverse fixture at home they managed a comfortable 3-1 victory.
The positive result comes at the backdrop of the early elimination of the men senior national team from the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup qualifiers with two games to spare and their subsequent tumbling five places down on the World Rankings to position 118.
ZIFA communication and competition manager Xolisani Gwesela said the association is happy with the achievement posted by the girl child in breaking new ground.
“We are elated that our ladies team has done it again by qualifying to the final round of the Africa Woman Cup of Nation championships which will be held in Morocco next year. We say well done to the Mighty Warriors and we hope they will be able to go past the final round. The ZIFA board and, the secretariat would like to thank all the relative stakeholders for making this success possible. Everyone involved is proud of this achievement by the team,” Gwesela said.
Gwesela believes football is another path the association is using to emancipate the girl child as to allow her to blossom to her full potential.
“We cherish the emancipation of the girl child so that she explodes to her full potential and we have been doing it through football.”
The Mighty Warriors in the ultimate round face off against Botswana who dispatched Angola 7-1 on aggregate.
The Mighty Warriors have been to the AWCON finals four times, in 2000, 2002, 2004 and the last time was in 2016. They also played in the 2016 Rio Olympics
